LA CALLE ES LIBRE

German illustrator who lived for more than fifteen years in Caracas, Venezuela, where she taught illustration at the Instituto de Diseño Neumann, worked as art director for Ekaré, a publishing house specializing in children's books, worked at Tricolor, a children's magazine, and illustrated several books. Her illustrations are marked by the precise observation of characters? traits, expressions, and attitudes, and by the meticulous representation of the light and color of the scenery. She illustrated the following books: La calle es libre (1981; English trans., The Streets are Free), Margarita, and Ni era vaca ni era caballo (It Wasn?t a Cow or a Horse). Her style greatly influenced the younger generation of Venezuelan illustrators. She claims that in order to illustrate reality one has to experiment with it in order to come to know it firsthand. Consequently, she based her illustrations for La calle es libre on the faces of the people who lived in ?El Cementerio,? a barrio where she lived for some time, and on some of the children of ?San José,? where the story takes place.
